This is one of my favorite desserts.  Dessert made from a box of cake mix, butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla.  You can make this dessert with different flavors so that you have many different desserts.  Made in two layers this dessert is chewy and gooey.

Mix toffee bits into the cream cheese mixture for a Toffee Gooey Butter Cake. Mix in Chocolate Chips to make a Chocolate Chip Gooey Butter Cake.  

Gooey Butter Cake

1st layer
1 box yellow cake mix
1 egg
1 stick butter, melted



2nd layer
1 (8 oz) pkg cream cheese, softened
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 stick butter, melted
1 (16 oz) box powdered sugar


Preheat oven to 350 degrees


Combine the ingredients for the 1st layer, cake mix, egg and butter, and mix well.  Spread the mixture into a layer in the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish.  


In a large mixing bowl, cream the cream cheese until smooth.  Add other ingredients of the 2nd layer, eggs, vanilla and butter.  Beat until combined.  Add the powdered sugar and mix well.


Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the cake batter layer.  Bake 40-50 minutes or until golden brown.  The center should still be gooey.


Let cool and cut into squares for serving.
