I love to make candy at Christmas time. My boss made these this year and gave me the recipe. I think they taste better than the peppermint patties you buy in the grocery store and they don't have the preservatives.
If you are making them for Christmas you could add red or green food coloring to the peppermint filling. You could use any color food coloring to use them for entertaining. It would be cute to use red or blue food coloring for pink and blue centers for a baby shower.

1 (14 oz) can Sweetened Condensed Milk
1 Tbsp peppermint extract
6 cups powdered sugar
food coloring (optional)
1 1/2 pounds chocolate flavored candy coating, melted
Line baking sheets with wax paper
Combine sweetened condensed milk, peppermint extract, and food coloring in a large bowl. Add 6 cups powdered sugar and beat with a hand mixer on low speed until smooth and well blended.
Sprinkle your work surface with powdered sugar & dump peppermint mixture out onto surface.
Knead the mixture lightly and form a smooth ball. Pull off and shape mixture into 1 inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Flatten into a 1 1/2 inch patty. Put the patties in the freezer until frozen.
Using 2 forks, dip each patty into warm chocolate. Must move quickly so that the peppermint mixture does not melt. Place chocolate covered peppermint patties onto wax paper covered baking sheets. Let set until chocolate is set and firm.
Store covered at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
